Alaqua Animal Refuge recently received a donation of $20,000 from the Harbor Rats Charitable Foundation, an increase from the $10,000 given last year. This contribution marks the second year of the Harbor Rats' support for the Refuge, further solidifying their commitment to community service and animal welfare.

“We are so proud of the work that Alaqua has done over these many years and look forward to growing our support of their ongoing efforts” said Marvin Holthouser, chairman of the Harbor Rats Board of Directors.

The Harbor Rats Charitable Foundation originated from a group of local businessmen seeking to make a positive impact in their community. Everyone came to know one another through Harbor Cigars, a local establishment owned by Holthouser. Today, the group boasts around 125 members and a six-member board, dedicated to organizing charity events and an annual golf tournament to support existing local charities.

“Marvin and his team’s visit to our new facility was enlightening,” said Alaqua founder Laurie Hood.

“Learning about their organization and discussing our future plans was incredibly inspiring. Their support is invaluable to us, and we look forward to a fruitful partnership,” she said.

The recent visit by the Harbor Rats Board to the Alaqua Animal Refuge included a tour of the new facilities and the formal presentation of the $20,000 check. This donation will significantly aid in supporting the refuge’s ongoing and future initiatives to provide care and shelter for animals in need.
